How-To: Make a Diaper Cake

March 28, 2009 by Jaclyn Rose

Since I am throwing my own baby shower for this pregnancy, I've been scouring the internet for ideas on baby shower games, party favors, decor and everything that has to do with baby showers. My first baby shower was for my oldest son and that was almost 10 years ago and wasn't your traditional baby shower, mainly because I was very young and didn't know what the heck I was doing, lol. I didn't have a baby shower for my youngest son because I had him only 17 months after I had my oldest son so there was no baby shower for him.

Now that I have this newest one on the way, I definitely need any help I can get in acquiring baby necessities since it's been so long since I've had to take care of a baby.

Anyways, I was searching for ideas on diaper cakes. The first one I ever saw was at a friend's baby shower a few years ago and I thought it was adorable. So I came across this tutorial on how to make a diaper cake. I like how it turned out so this is where I got my idea from.

And since I chose a jungle/safari theme for this baby, I got some very cute ideas from this website.

I had purchased some items for the baby and used those to make the cake. I figured, cute centerpiece decoration for the baby shower and of course, after I can just use it when the baby is here!

So I thought I'd share my 3 hour project with you all. Enjoy!

We take these everyday baby items and combine it with some nice ribbon and a little creativity...

...to make this adorable diaper cake centerpiece, perfect gift for the mother-to-be and decoration for the baby shower.

What I used:

baby stuff
about 124 size 1-2 diapers
bottle of baby shampoo
bottle of baby powder
six 8oz baby bottles
lion sutff animal
monkey teether
package of 2 pacifiers
a couple of pairs of shoes
monkey neck pillow
lion blanket

arts & craft stuff
package of rubber bands
2 1/2" by 10 yards white satin ribbon
3 different types of decorative ribbon to match color theme
craft tissue paper
foam board

LET'S GET STARTED...

cut foam board to size. I also put the lion blanket on top of foam board, under cake, for decorative purpose. Take 2 diapers roll them up and secure with rubber band and place around baby shampoo bottle.

Should look like this so far. I tied it up to give it it's foundation.

this will be tier 1. I had put 3 layers there.

Secure with ribbon or string to make it nice and tight together.

place tissue paper over first tier. This is to cover the licensed characters on the diapers.

cut a hole in the middle so the baby shampoo bottle can peek out and tuck tissue paper under the diapers. This is what it should look like so far.

Now work on the second tier, but only 2 layers this time and secure with ribbon or string.

do the same thing with tissue paper. What I did here was replaced every other diaper with a 8oz. baby bottle to give it some pizazz, like cake candles, if you will. Then place the bottle of baby powder on top for the top tiers of the cake.

rinse and repeat for the next 2 tiers. Since there was only 1 layer for the 3rd tier, I only rolled up 1 diaper rather than 2 diapers for the very top tier. Wrap with tissue paper like previous tiers. I added the lion stuffed animal to the very top of the cake.

to give it a nice touch and look, I wrapped each tier with 2 rows of white satin ribbon and secured it with scotch tape on the back of the cake.

Do that to all the tiers.

take your decorative ribbon and wrap each tier. I alternated between two different ones.

Add your baby toys and accessories. I also made a bow with the leftover ribbon and placed that under the stuffed lion! And there you have it. Your very own diaper cake for the baby shower and mom to be.
